Insurance industry offers tips to avoid frozen pipes

(KFVS) - The Missouri Insurance Information Service is offering tips to avoid frozen water pipes as winter weather sets in.

The insurance industry offers the following tips to help protect water pipes from the cold:

Corps installs temporary flood protection at Birds Point

MISSISSIPPI COUNTY, MO (KFVS)-

The Commander of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers' Mississippi Valley
Division has directed an orderly shutdown of the Birds Point-New Madrid
project area due to forecasts of unseasonably high river levels.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is warning those in the Birds Point-New Madrid Floodway of a "significant risk of renewed flooding" in that area for the near future due to unseasonably high river levels.

The Corps has been rebuilding the levee after intentionally breaching it in May to relieve pressure on a swollen Mississippi River and flood more than 130,000 acres of farmland and several of homes.

Maj. Gen. John Peabody ordered the installation of a Hesco Barrier at the upper crevasse to temporarily bring the system to a 55 ft level of protection (on Cairo gage) for the BPNM Floodway. Construction in this region usually stops between December and May due to adverse weather conditions.

Mo. conservation agents wrap up firearms deer season poaching cases

Mo. conservation agents wrap up firearms deer season poaching cases

MISSISSIPPI COUNTY, MO (KFVS) - Conservation agents in Missouri's Southeast region issued 225 citations and 238 written warnings for Wildlife Code violations during firearms deer season.

According to MDC, the cited violations included hunting without a deer permit, refusing inspection by an agent, trying to take deer from a public road or car, baiting, failure to wear hunter orange and other violations. They say 22 violations were not deer related.

Ken West, Protection Division Supervisor for the MDC's Southeast Region, said finding wildlife violators is a rewarding task for conservation agents.

"Poaching is not a hunting and our agents work hard to sort out the poachers from the ethical hunters," said West.
