Teen suspect in nightclub murder makes first court appearance

Devonte Johnson's first appearance in Mississippi County court was a short one.

He waived formal arraignment and his preliminary hearing was scheduled for September 22.

Johnson, just 18 years old, is charged with first degree murder, armed criminal action and unlawful use of a weapon.

Police say he killed Nicholas Munn, 28, of Sikeston, in the parking lot of Bro's Kickin' Nightclub on August 13.

The nightclub owner said she called police when she heard gunshots and someone found Munn in the parking lot across the street.

Johnson left the area after the alleged murder. he was arrested on August 18 in Kalamazoo, Michigan.

The teenager then waived extradition and was returned to Missouri.

Johnson was being held without bond in the Mississippi County Jail.

Local author to speak at Kelly Middle School

Local author to speak at Kelly Middle School

BENTON, MO (KFVS) - Author Shirley Coleman will speak to Thomas W. Kelly Middle School on August 29 in the Kelly Middle School Gym.

A reception will be at 6:30 p.m., followed by a speech and signing at 7 p.m. Coleman will be speaking on life's journey, meaning, fulfillment and the importance of enjoying the time you have here with your family and friends. She will also be signing copies of her new book, "You Can't Go Back."

Coleman was born in Miner Switch, Mo. and is the eleventh child of 12 siblings. She is a school counselor and teacher, preacher's wife, mother and grandmother. She says her purpose in writing the book is to provide strength and encouragement to endure the trials of life.

Teachers, staff attended a three day workshop in early Aug.

EAST PRAIRIE, MO (KFVS) - In early August, the teachers and staff at R.A. Doyle Elementary School attended a three day workshop on "The Leader in Me" program.

According to the East Prairie R-II School District, this program promotes fostering the strengths in each and every student so that every student can be a leader. The program is based on "The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People."

Murals have been painted by Kara Adams around the R.A. Doyle campus to promote these seven habits.

KFVS12 WebCast announces 5th season fall schedule

(KFVS) - The Southeast Health WebCast on KFVS12 has announced its fifth season fall schedule that starts Friday, August 26 with the Gateway Tech vs. Sikeston high school football game live from Sikeston High School.

The new fall schedule runs through November and will include several Southeast Redhawk sports, parades and a high school football game of the week series.

“Each week we’ll feature a high school match-up that we think will be a top game of the week,” said Mike Wunderlich, Director of Operations and Executive Producer of the WebCasts.

East Prairie R-2 schools staff attend seminar

EAST PRAIRIE, MO (KFVS) - The staff at East Prairie R-2 schools attended a seminar during teacher orientation on August 15.

The seminar was presented by Dr. Fred Johnson who has spent many years in the field of education and now serves as the Executive Director of Education Resource Services.

Johnson has worked as a classroom teacher, school psychologist, behavior specialist, school principal and director of special programs. He finished his doctorate in Behavioral Psychology and has written four books dealing with classroom behavior management.

Police charge man with murder in connection to nightclub shooting

Charleston police found and arrested a Missouri nightclub murder suspect in Michigan.

Nicholas A. Munn, 28, of Sikeston was shot to death August 13 on the parking lot of Bro's Kickin' Nightclub around 2:30 a.m. on West Marshall Street in Charleston.

The Charleston Department of Public Safety along with the Missouri State Highway Patrol, began an investigation into the events that led to his death.

Police say a warrant was issued for Devonte Johnson, 18 of Charleston on Aug. 13 charging him with murder 1st degree, armed criminal action and unlawful use of a weapon.

Johnson had fled the area, and police began a search for the man, investigators said. On August 18, Johnson was found and arrested in Kalamazoo Michigan. He waived extradition and was returned to Missouri.
