State Treasurer warns Missourians of unclaimed property e-mail scam

MISSOURI (KFVS) - State Treasurer Clint Zweifel announced Monday that Missourians should beware of an e-mail scam being sent nationwide claiming the recipient is owed $2.8 million in unclaimed property found in a metal trunk.

Zweifel says the e-mail will go on to request personal information. He says the current scam e-mail states a fake person, Jeff Smith, director of the National Association of Unclaimed Property Administration, is working with the FBI to return $2.8 million found with the recipient's e-mail address and name attached.

The e-mail will then ask for personal information such as: the recipient's full name, address, telephone number, age and occupation. If a person responds, he or she is then directed to call an attorney based in the United Kingdom to provide personal financial information.
