Endangered species takes over section of floodway

The Birds Point New Madrid Floodway is living up to its name. Birds are taking over part of it near Big Oak Tree State Park.

"It's prime farm ground, just have sand about 4-5 foot deep," said Milus Wallace-Mississippi County Farmer. Milus Wallace owns land inside the floodway near Dorena.

He's able to start farming again in some areas, but definitely not in one spot.

"They're nesting on probably 30 acres," said Wallace.

Interior Least Terns are taking over. They're nesting on what's now a sandbar brought in from the Mississippi River after the Corps of Engineers blasted the levee in late April.

"This is a refugee of the flooding," said Bob Gillespie-Natural History Biologist with the Missouri Department of Conservation.

When the Corps activated the floodway, it certainly affected wildlife. Many were stranded with little to nothing to eat.

Bone fragments found at Birds Point

Authorities are trying to identify some bone fragments found near the Birds Point levee.

Someone found them last month after the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers blasted the levee to open the New Madrid Floodway.

It's not clear where the bones came from, but officials say they could be very old, possibly from an ancient tribal community.

More than $125,000 worth of marijuana found

Mississippi County Sheriff's Department arrested two people from Charleston after finding more than 21 pounds of marijuana on Saturday, June 25.

Richard "Rick" Hensley, 48, is charged with possession with intent to distribute.

Melinda Larkins is charged with possession with intent to distribute.

Mississippi County Sheriff Keith Moore says the marijuana Richard Hensley possessed was worth more than $125,000.

Moore says Hensley involved his teenage children in the operation.

"We weighed it out and the best of our recollection we could come up with was 21 and a half pounds," Moore said. "For it [marijuana] being bagged up, this is the biggest we've come up with so far."

Moore says this investigation has been going on for two to three years. Sheriff Moore says he believes the growing operation took place in Ballard County, Kentucky.

Hensley's and Larkins' bond is each set at $150,000 cash only.
