M.D.A. raises almost $20,000 for disaster areas

MISSISSIPPI COUNTY, MO (KFVS) - The Missouri Department of Agriculture announced Thursday that they raised almost $20,000 in 24 hours for people affected by the recent disasters in southern Missouri.

Staff members of the department led a donation drive for the Food Bank of Central Missouri that included a challenge to other state agencies, community organizations and agriculture industries groups.

“Our hearts and prayers certainly go out to all of those affected by the tornadoes and severe storms in Joplin and to those trying to get back on their feet following flooding throughout the southern portion of our state,” said Director of Agriculture Dr.

Funeral arrangements, fund set for 5-year-old hit by truck

A 5-year-old girl was hit and killed Sunday night when she stepped in front of a truck according to the Missouri State Highway Patrol.

According to the patrol, Maddison Hart, 5, of Sikeston was in a ditch in tall grass on the shoulder of County Road 326 five miles south of Charleston when she stepped out of the ditch into the path of the truck.

The truck, a 2011 Ford F150, was driven by David Sutton, 20, of East Prairie.

Hart was taken to Missouri Delta Medical Center in Sikeston where she died at 6:30 p.m.

Hart's visitation will be 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, May 28 with the funeral at 2 p.m. at First Baptist Church in Charleston.

According to a family member, a fund has been set of at Focus Bank for Maddison Hart.  Locations include Charleston, East Prairie and Sikeston.

FEMA disaster recovery center opens

CHARLESTON, MO (KFVS) - A FEMA disaster recovery center has opened in Charleston, Mo.

The disaster center is located at Charleston High School. It will be open from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and closed on Sunday.

The center will be open for a limited time only.

A.J. Martin students earn tickets during MAP testing

A.J. Martin students earn tickets during MAP testing

EAST PRAIRIE, MO (KFVS) - The students at A.J. Martin Elementary earned tickets during MAP testing that would enter them in a drawing.

Each day of testing, students could earn tickets for their attendance, behavior, attitude and effort.

The students above won tickets during every day of testing and were entered in a drawing to win monetary prizes. The include: Hannah Stempkovski who won $25, Rose Waldo won $50, Chris Dempsey won $100 and Lily Haberlock won $10.

Students finished MAP testing about a month ago for the 2010-2011 school year.

Mo. Farm Bureau offers toll-free number for insurance claims

MISSISSIPPI COUNTY, MO (KFVS) - The Missouri Farm Bureau Insurance Services is offering a toll-free phone number for homeowners in storm-affected areas.

This number can be used by those with Farm Bureau insurance to get help with reporting damages and filing claims if they cannot get in touch with their local county Farm Bureau offices.

You can call 1-877-FB CLAIM (1-877-322-5246) and a Representative will help you. The farm bureau says most of their offices are open, but if you do not receive an answer call the toll-free number.

MoDOT launches Click it or Ticket campaign

MISSISSIPPI COUNTY, MO (KFVS) - According to MoDOT, more than 200 law enforcement agencies are expected to participate in this year's Click it or Ticket campaign May 23-June 5.

MoDOT says seat belt use in Missouri has stayed relatively unchanged in the last several years and is consistently below the national average. According to MoDOT, teens and pickup truck drivers are among those least likely to buckle up at 66 and 64 percent. Seven out of 10 Missourians killed in traffic crashes in 2010 were not wearing a seat belt.

"It's time we try some new things in our state to increase seat belt usage," said Leanna Depue, chair of the executive committee of the Missouri Coalition for Roadway Safety.

MDNR providing up to $10 million for energy efficient projects

MISSISSIPPI COUNTY, MO (KFVS) - The Missouri Department of Natural Resources will be providing up to $10 million in low-interest loans for energy efficiency projects through the Energize Missouri Schools and Local Governments program.

The loans will help Missouri school districts, local governments, public colleges and universities.

"The energy savings achieved through these projects will save taxpayers money, and will allow schools, local governments, and colleges and universities to redirect the energy savings to continue investment into other essential services and capital improvement projects," said Sara Parker Pauley, director of the Missouri Department of Natural Resources.
