5th grade English class uses 'Mississippi County Times' for teaching

5th grade English class uses 'Mississippi County Times' for teaching

CHARLESTON, MO (KFVS) - The local newspaper can be used for many things, from wedding announcements to sports scores - and at Hearnes Elementary, can also be used for teaching.

Carla Kelly, fifth grade reading teacher, is using newspapers to teach her students the value of "informational text," a type of non-fiction or fact.

Kelley's first lesson was on the parts of a paper and how to find information. The class will use news stories as writing prompts, search for context clues in the text, identify vocabulary words, and much more in the weeks to come.

According to Kelley, informational text is part of a major shift in today's Missouri Common Core Standards, which states that reading text will help students "be better readers in all content areas."

MoDOT launches Missouri Pothole Patrol

MoDOT launches Missouri Pothole Patrol

(KFVS) - At the Missouri Department of Transportation, the arrival of spring means crews turn their attention to the potholes that “spring” forth as temperatures change.

The department has initiated a statewide “Missouri Pothole Patrol,” which is a month-long effort for MoDOT to concentrate on patching potholes and keeping highways smooth and safe for drivers.

“The goal of this effort is to patch potholes as quickly as possible and get us through the transition to warmer weather,” said Elizabeth Wright, MoDOT state maintenance engineer. “MoDOT has dedicated staff and resources to repair minor road damage quickly, but we need the public’s help to spot those potholes and let us know where they are.”

The Missouri Pothole Patrol runs from March 18 through April 14.

MoDOT says there are multiple ways for drivers can report potholes:

Concerns rise along with river levels in Mississippi County

MISSISSIPPI COUNTY, MO (KFVS)- Mississippi County has had it's fair share of flooding in the past. Now with river levels above flood stage, people tend to keep a closer eye on the readings.

Flooding devastated the area two years ago.

Residents say they would be worried about how the new levee would hold and other flooding concerns that could impact them if waters were to rise a little higher.

Stanley Mays once lived in the spillway before his house was totaled from rushing flood waters. The Corp of Engineers blew the levee at Birds Point two years ago.

Mays says he still has some land that he works on in the spillway. He is keeping a closer eye on the river levels as they rise.

He worries about the impact on the area it would have if the waters were to get higher.
