U.S. Corps of Engineers offers cold water survival tips

WAPPAPELLO LAKE, MO (KFVS) - The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers at Wappapello and the SEMO Regional Water Safety Council are reminding residents to play it safe during the winter.

The Corps says there are some things you can do to save your life if you find yourself in cold water. First, all boaters should wear a life jacket and dress for the water temperature, not the air temperature. They say cold water immersion causes numerous fatalities through four stages: shock, swimming failure, hypothermia and post-rescue collapse.

Charleston man pleads guilty to gun charges, faces life in prison

CHARLESTON, MO (KFVS) - The U.S. Attorney's office announced Tuesday that a Charleston man pleaded guilty to gun charges.

Danny Lee Byrd, 25, pleaded guilty to one felony count of being a previously convicted felon with a gun. He appeared before U.S. District Judge Henry E. Autrey.

According to the attorney's office, on January 20 at about 3 a.m., a truck was reported stolen from the parking lot at the Pilot Travel Center in Charleston, Mo. Officers later discovered the truck had been returned to the same parking lot.

Officers say Byrd was in the truck and appeared to be sleeping. They say the truck had been damaged and six guns were found in the cab of the truck, which officers say did not belong to the truck owner.

The attorney's offices says officers then found several items of mail in the bed of the truck that were addressed to an area homeowner. An investigation revealed the home had been burglarized that evening and the guns taken from the home.

Work continues on US 60/62 bridge

CHARLESTON, MO (KFVS)-

It's been closed for more than a year because it needed to be repaired. The US 60/62 bridge takes you from southern Illinois to southeast Missouri.

Illinois Department of Transportation Engineer Doug Helfrich says more than a year ago they closed the bridge to replace steel members along the floor beams. Helfrich says they got that part of the job done early. But he adds as crews worked on those repairs more problems came to light.

"We noticed that the concrete adjacent to the joints had deteriorated and that work, again, that was all added work to the contract, because its concrete, we have temperature requirements," Helfrich said.

Helfrich says the temperature has to be at least 40 degrees or warmer. He adds crews have taken advantage of the mild winter and hopes to get more concrete poured this week.

The originally cost to tax payers was $1.6 million. But the extra repairs adds an extra $800,000 to the price tag.
