Birds Point farmers, residents invited to documentary showing

EAST PRAIRIE, MO (KFVS) - Farmers and residents in the Birds Point-New Madrid Flooway are invited to watch the premiere of a short documentary film called "Man Made: Disaster at Birds Point."

The film chronicles the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers' decision to intentionally breach the Birds Point levee in May which flooded 130,000 acres of farmland and dozens of houses.  The documentary was done by Osborn & Barr, a Missouri-based communications company specializing in agriculture.

The showing will be Friday, September 9 at 10 a.m. at the East Prairie Senior High School at 304 East Walnut Street in East Prairie.

Southeast Missouri State library conducts survey of original Civil War materials

CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS) - Southeast Missouri State University's Kent Library will be conducting a survey of original Civil War materials.

Included in the survey will be materials held by libraries, museums, historic societies, genealogical societies, archives, individuals, State historic sites or other organizations and institutions.

According to Kent Library, the materials will include things like original letters, journals, diaries, photographs, scrapbooks artifacts and other things from that period.

Missouri counties in the survey include:

  • St.

Local author to speak at Kelly Middle School

Local author to speak at Kelly Middle School

BENTON, MO (KFVS) - Author Shirley Coleman will speak to Thomas W. Kelly Middle School on August 29 in the Kelly Middle School Gym.

A reception will be at 6:30 p.m., followed by a speech and signing at 7 p.m. Coleman will be speaking on life's journey, meaning, fulfillment and the importance of enjoying the time you have here with your family and friends. She will also be signing copies of her new book, "You Can't Go Back."

Coleman was born in Miner Switch, Mo. and is the eleventh child of 12 siblings. She is a school counselor and teacher, preacher's wife, mother and grandmother. She says her purpose in writing the book is to provide strength and encouragement to endure the trials of life.

Nominate someone you know for the Mo. Older Worker of the Year contest

MISSISSIPPI COUNTY, MO (KFVS) - The state of Missouri is looking for your nominations for their annual Older Worker of the Year contest.

The contest looks to honor a Missouri resident who is 60 or older, employed at least 20 hours a week and shows dependability and new skills on the job.

The winner and regional finalists will be recognized at a two-day awards ceremony in Jefferson City, Mo. in November.

"Older workers play a vital role in our economy," said Margaret Donnelly, director of the Department of Health and Senior Services, which is helping to sponsor the contest.  "They're highly valued for qualities such as judgment, commitment to quality, attendance and punctuality. Companies who recruit mature workers can attract top talent in a changing workforce."

The Older Worker of the Year for 2010 was Nina George, a teacher's aide for 44 years.

Tenth annual Tour de Corn

Tenth annual Tour de Corn

EAST PRAIRIE, MO (KFVS) - The 10th Annual Tour de Corn bicycle ride will be on Saturday, June 25.

The tour starts at 7:30 a.m. and cyclists have a choice of four routes: 15 miles, 30 miles, 60 miles and 100 miles.

This year the charities include the Juvenile Diabetes Association, the East Prairie Senior Citizen Nutrition Center and other local charities.

In the 2010 ride, over 800 cyclists from 14 states participated.

The Tour de Corn will be held in conjunction with East Prairie's Sweetcorn Festival.
