CHARLESTON, MO (KFVS) - The Charleston Merchants Group has joined efforts this year for the first time ever to do a cooperative ad campaign to kick off the holiday season and encourage local shopping starting with Small Business Saturday.

The group says small businesses know they stand little chance to compete with national chains on bare bones pricing on Black Friday. Major retailers buy in bulk and therefore get preferred lower pricing than is offered to the small store. Small stores can and do; however, specialize in customer service, knowledge of individual customers’ desires, and convenience.

Small Business Saturday comes after Black Friday and before Cyber Monday. The Merchant Group gives three reasons why it is important to shop small and shop locally. They include:

  • When you spend $100 online, $0 is returned to your community
  • When you spend $100 in a national chain, $42 remains in your community
  • When you spend $100 locally, $62 stays right in your community
