East Prairie man arrested after felony assault investigation | Crime
MISSISSIPPI COUNTY, MO (KFVS) - A man is in custody after a felony assault investigation by the Mississippi County Sheriff's Office.
Steven Earl Carter, 56, of East Prairie, was charged with domestic assault and felonious restraint.
According to Sheriff Keith Moore, the investigation began last Wednesday night when a deputy was dispatched to a burglary and assault in progress on County Road 510 in Dorena.
The caller said a woman had ran into his home and was chased inside by a much larger man who was biting and punching the woman. The sheriff's office said the resident feared for the woman's safety, so he tried to unsuccessfully stop the assault, then left the home to call for help.
When the deputy arrived, he met with the resident who was waiting in a nearby field.
After hearing the suspect was still inside the home, deputies went inside to investigate. As they searched the home, they say they found Carter in a back bedroom, on his knees, with the female victim pinned beneath him on the bed.
Sheriff Moore said a deputy removed Carter from the bedroom and arrested him.
Deputies then checked on the victim. They say she had black eyes, several bite marks and cuts across her face and body. Due to her injuries, she was transported from the scene for treatment.
According to the sheriff's office, the following morning, a deputy got a statement from the victim.
"Deputy Watkins arrived within minutes of dispatch receiving the call," Sheriff Moore said. "But had the homeowner not fled to seek help, we may have had a very different outcome."
Moore said his office will seek an additional charge for first degree burglary against Carter for his unlawful entry into the home.
Carter is in the Mississippi County Detention Center, with bond set at $50,000.
