2 new volunteer programs at Missouri State Parks

MISSISSIPPI COUNTY, MO (KFVS) - Missouri state parks have added two new programs to allow groups to volunteer at state parks and historic sites.

Families, organizations, youth groups, school groups and businesses the opportunity to support a Missouri state park or historic site through the newly added Adopt-a-Park and Youth Volunteer Patch programs.

Groups can adopt areas within a park or historic site, such as trails, campgrounds, picnic areas and streams.

Groups are asked to contribute 200 hours of service hours a year for two years.

National Kids to Parks Day on May 19

(KFVS) - Missouri State Parks encourages all Missourians to get out in a park on National Kids to Parks Day, May 19.

The national event is sponsored by the National Park Trust.

Missouri Gov. Jay Nixon proclaimed May 19 as Kids to Parks Day in Missouri.

Parks can provide an opportunity for children to engage in active lifestyles while experiencing what nature has to offer. Whether it is a hike, a swim, or a bike ride all outdoor activities contribute to a healthy lifestyle.

Gov. Nixon created the Children in Nature Challenge to encourage activities that introduce children to nature year-round. Communities and families can participate in the challenge.

Community photos: Turtles at Big Lake

MISSISSIPPI COUNTY, MO (KFVS) - Turtles were plentiful this past weekend at Big Lake just north of Charleston.

They took advantage of the nice weather and took in some sun while watching the people fishing.

MISSISSIPPI COUNTY, MO (KFVS) - Blue indigo buntings foraging for seed on the grasses at Big Oak State Park.

At one time we saw seven of these beautiful birds on the ground in one area.

MISSISSIPPI COUNTY, MO (KFVS) - Even though there are still places to fish at Big Oak, the big pond is very dry right now, needing a big rain.

This is a stark contrast to what it looked like a year ago when the levee was breached.
