Charleston's Christmas parade, activities scheduled

CHARLESTON, MO (KFVS) - Charleston's annual Christmas parade has been scheduled for Friday, Dec. 2 at 6 p.m.

The theme this year is "A Retro Christmas" and a panel of out-of-town judges will decide the best entries. Prizes will be given.

Any business, church or group that would like to participate should contact the Chamber of Commerce at 573-683-6509 or chamber@charlestonmo.org.

Other activities for that evening include:

  • Open house at the Mississippi Co. Historical Society - 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.
  • Focus Bank's Relay for Life team will sell hot chocolate and goodies at their gazebo downtown before and after the parade
  • After the parade, St. Henry's Children's Choir will perform and there will be a Community Christmas Sing-Along
  • Get pictures taken with Santa and Mrs. Claus

Winners announced for MoDOT bridge building contest

(KFVS) - The Missouri Department of Transportation announced Friday the winners in the Eighth Annual Bridge Building Competition.

Southeast Missouri high school students put their bridges to the test Thursday for the competition that challenged juniors and seniors to design and build the most efficient model bridge using 15 pieces of balsa wood, thread and glue.

Schools that placed include Ste. Genevieve in first place, Oak Ridge High School in second and Chaffee High School in third place for best overall performance respectively. These schools received cash prizes donated by the Chapter 10 Transportation Employees Association of Missouri, as well as a U.S. flag donated by U.S. Representative Jo Ann Emerson.

In addition, MoDOT says five students were recognized for building the lightest bridges that carried the greatest loads:

Club hosts 5K to raise money

CHARLESTON, MO (KFVS) - The Charleston Junior Study Club will hold a 5K race to raise money for the Charleston Scout Cabin and scholarship funds.

The race will take place on December 10th. Those who want to participate should register by November 21st. To register, visit the club's website or email them at charlestonjuniorstudyclub@gmail.com.

It costs $15 to participate if you register in advance. You can also sign up the day of the race. It costs $20 the day of the race. Day-of registration begins at 7:50 a.m. at the Scout Cabin at the corner of Cypress and Stark Streets.

The first 50 participants will receive a long-sleeve Jingle Bell Jog T-shirt. The race starts at 8:00 a.m. at the Scout Cabin.

High school students compete in MoDOT's bridge building competition

CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS) - Southeast Missouri high school students will be putting their bridges to the test at the Missouri Department of Transportation's Eighth Annual Bridge Building Competition on Thursday, Nov. 17.

The competition will be at Cape West 14 Cine in Cape Girardeau, Mo. Doors will open at 8 a.m., the competition starts at 9 a.m. and finishes at about 2 p.m.

According to MoDOT, the competition challenges high school juniors and seniors to design and build the most efficient model bridge using limited materials, including: 15 pieces of balsa wood, thread and glue. In September, MoDOT delivered bridge kits with these materials to participants throughout the Southeast District.

"In addition to giving students a great opportunity to learn about engineering, participating schools can also win prizes," said Senior Highway Designer Anita Clark.

Family Game Night event at Warren E. Hearnes Elementary

CHARLESTON, MO (KFVS) - Warren E. Hearnes Elementary will host a Family Game Night on Tuesday, Nov. 15 from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m.

The school says the event is open to all Hearnes students in grades pre-k to fifth including their families.

This free event is the third in a series of family events presented this school year by B.J. Babb, Parent Liaison at Hearnes. Others in the series included "Math Carnival" and "Reading Rocks" events.

Game night will include free refreshments, door prizes, games and activities.

Blood drive in Charleston

CHARLESTON, MO (KFVS) - The American Red Cross is asking you to give thanks for good health by donating blood.

According to the Red Cross, only 111 million people are eligible to donate blood. That's just over 37% of the U.S. Population.

You can donate blood on Monday, November 21st at St. Henry's Knights of Columbus at 303 S. Sixth Street in Charleston. The blood drive runs from 12:30 - 5:30 p.m.

EAST PRAIRIE, MO (KFVS) - The American Red Cross will hold a blood drive a East Prairie on Thursday, Nov. 10.

You can give blood from 12:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the First Baptist Church located at 205 Pearl Street.
