Entries for Drinking Water Week poster contest due March 25

(KFVS) - The Missouri Department of Natural Resources, working with the American Water Works Association, is accepting entries from Missouri fifth-grade students for the annual Drinking Water Week poster contest.

Drinking Water Week, May 5-11, 2013, recognizes the importance of safe, reliable water supplies to Missouri communities. In celebration of Drinking Water Week the Department of Natural Resources and the American Water Works Association are holding a poster contest for students in the fifth grade.

Prizes will be awarded to the top three winners: $300 for first place, and $200 for second place and $100 for third place. Contest entries should be postmarked by March 25, 2013.

The artwork size must be no larger than 11x17 inches. Each entry should have the student’s name, the teacher’s name and the school name, address and telephone number on the back. Students should also be sure to sign the front of the artwork.

525 Heartland students to compete in National History Day regional contest

CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS) - About 525 area junior high and high school students are expected to compete in the National History Day in Missouri regional contest March 15 at Southeast Missouri State University.

Students from Bollinger, Butler, Cape Girardeau, Carter, Dunklin, Iron, Madison, Mississippi, New Madrid, Pemiscot, Perry, Reynolds, Ripley, Scott, St. Francois, Ste. Genevieve, Stoddard, Washington and Wayne counties will compete for the chance to advance to the state National History Day competition at the University of Missouri April 20.

Charleston kindergarten to hold enrollment at Hearnes Elementary

CHARLESTON, MO (KFVS) - Charleston R-1 School District will hold its annual enrollment event for children going into Kindergarten or 4-Year-Old Program (Pre-K) on Thursday, March 14 from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m.

The event will take place at the Hearnes Elementary Kindergarten's "Orange Door."

 

Children must turn age five by July 31, 2013 in order to be eligible to enroll for Kindergarten, and must turn age four by July 31, 2013 in order to be eligible to enroll in 4-Year-Old Program.

Parents must be sure to bring the child's Social Security card, birth certificate, and shot record, as well as a proof of residency (like a phone bill). The child must also be present for screening.

EAST PRAIRIE, MO (KFVS) - The Doyle Library Book Fair will be March 19 through March 26 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily

Family Night will be March 21 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.

The library says cash, credit cards and debit cards will be accepted and they ask that you please allow for tax. They say you can shop online Friday March 15 through Thursday April 4 by clicking here.

Missouri statewide tornado drill set for March 5

BENTON, MO (KFVS) - The Scott County Emergency Management Agency says the Missouri Statewide Tornado Drill and Severe Weather Awareness Week are good time to prepare for severe weather.

Missouri's StormAware website provides tornado sheltering videos, other safety resources to prepare for March 5 tornado drill during Missouri Severe Weather Awareness Week, March 4-8.

The National Weather Service, the State Emergency Management Agency and Missouri's local emergency management offices are asking Missourians  to use this week as an opportunity to plan and prepare for how they will react and shelter in response to severe weather.

 EMA officials say Missouri will conduct the 39th annual Statewide Tornado Drill on Tuesday, March 5 at 1:30 p.m. If severe weather is in the forecast on March 5, the drill will be moved to Thursday, March 7 at 1:30 p.m.
