5th grade students invited to enter Earth Day 2013 slogan contest

(KFVS) - Missouri’s fifth-grade students are known to have lots of energy, and the Missouri Department of Natural Resources is seeking to tap that energy to provide ideas for the Earth Day 2013 slogan.

The Department of Natural Resources is once again sponsoring a slogan contest for Missouri fifth-grade students. Students are asked to create their slogan ideas based on the theme “Energy Efficiency.” The student submitting the winning entry will be honored at the Earth Day 2013 celebration, April 19 at the Capitol in Jefferson City.

Deadline for the slogan contest is Feb. 28. The winners will be announced in March.

(KFVS) - Registration for the 2013 Great Central U.S. ShakeOut is still open.

The next ShakeOut will take place on Feb. 7 at 10:15 a.m. Organizers say this date coincides with the anniversary of the Feb. 7, 1812 earthquake near New Madrid, Mo. They say this earthquake was one of at least three magnitude 7 or greater events that struck in the winter of 1811-1812, and forever changed the landscape of the region.

RDPC brings free mass fatality planning, response course to Cape Girardeau

(KFVS) - The Rural Domestic Preparedness Consortium is making it easier for emergency responders in Cape Girardeau to be prepared for such events by delivering a free U.S. Department of Homeland Security-certified course in mass fatality planning and response for rural communities.

This eight hour instructor-led course will be offered on Jan. 29 from 8 a.m. yo 5 p.m. at Cape Girardeau County Public Health Center, 1121 Linden Street, giving participants the basics of mass fatality response while providing the opportunities to exchange rural perceptions and brainstorm solutions to simulated emergencies.

(KFVS) - The 7th Annual Polar Plunge will take place February 2.

Brave men and women from around the area will don costumes and swimwear and take “polar” dips into Lake Boutin. Their Reason for Freezin’ is the athletes of Special Olympics Missouri. All proceeds from this year’s event will benefit training and competition for the 1,100 Special Olympics Missouri athletes here in the Southeast Area.    

The Polar Plunge is open to anyone 10 years or older who is a fan of having a good time for a good cause. The event is hosted by Cape Girardeau Police Department and will take place at the Lake Boutin, 429 Moccasin Springs, Jackson, Mo. Day-of registration begins at noon and the Plunge starts at 2 p.m.

East Prairie dance team to host dance clinic Jan. 26

EAST PRAIRIE, MO (KFVS) - The Lil' Stepper Dance Clinic will be presented by Coach Kelle Goodding and the East Prairie Redstepper Dance Team on January 26.

The dance clinic will be in the high school gym at the following times:

  • 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. - Pre-school through 1st grade (Class 1)
  • 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. - 2nd grade through 4th grade (Class 2)
  • 10:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. - 5th grade through 6th grade (Class 3)

The clinic costs $15 and an addition $10 for a t-shirt is optional. The performance will be Jan. 31 at the high school basketball game. For more information, including how to order a t-shirt, you can click here.
