Charleston's Christmas parade, activities scheduled

CHARLESTON, MO (KFVS) - Charleston's annual Christmas parade has been scheduled for Friday, Dec. 2 at 6 p.m.

The theme this year is "A Retro Christmas" and a panel of out-of-town judges will decide the best entries. Prizes will be given.

Any business, church or group that would like to participate should contact the Chamber of Commerce at 573-683-6509 or chamber@charlestonmo.org.

Other activities for that evening include:

  • Open house at the Mississippi Co. Historical Society - 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.
  • Focus Bank's Relay for Life team will sell hot chocolate and goodies at their gazebo downtown before and after the parade
  • After the parade, St. Henry's Children's Choir will perform and there will be a Community Christmas Sing-Along
  • Get pictures taken with Santa and Mrs. Claus

Family Game Night event at Warren E. Hearnes Elementary

CHARLESTON, MO (KFVS) - Warren E. Hearnes Elementary will host a Family Game Night on Tuesday, Nov. 15 from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m.

The school says the event is open to all Hearnes students in grades pre-k to fifth including their families.

This free event is the third in a series of family events presented this school year by B.J. Babb, Parent Liaison at Hearnes. Others in the series included "Math Carnival" and "Reading Rocks" events.

Game night will include free refreshments, door prizes, games and activities.

Winners of grade level quilts announced

EAST PRAIRIE, MO (KFVS) - R.A. Doyle Elementary held a drawing Friday, Oct. 28 to determine the winners of the grade level quilts created by students and Connie Dickerson.

The winners include:

  • Preschool quilt - Mike and Denise Ray
  • Kindergarten quilt - Jessica Curtner
  • First grade quilt - Misty and Tony Chism
  • Second grade quilt - Tammy Thresher

The school asks if you are a winner and have not claimed your quilt, please contact R.A. Doyle Elementary at 649-2272.

Warren E. Hearnes Elementary hosts "Reading Rocks Family Night"

CHARLESTON, MO (KFVS) - Warren E. Hearnes Elementary announced it will host its second-ever "Reading Rocks Family Night" on Thursday, Oct. 13 from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m.

The school says the event will be open for first through fifth grade Hearnes students and their families.

The free event is one in a series of family events organized by Hearnes Parent Liaison B.J. Babb. Other events include the recent "Math Carnival" held on September 13 and the "Family Game Night" that will be Nov. 15.

Reading rocks will include refreshments, door prizes and a free book for each student. The students will be able to read books to adults and take Accelerated Reader tests.

National Child Safety Passenger Week in Mo.

(KFVS) - The Missouri State Highway Patrol joins the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and other safety advocates for National Child Safety Passenger Week September 18 through 24.

The State Highway Patrol says the primary goal of this program is to remind all parents and other adults responsible for children traveling in cars the importance of child safety seats and seat belts. The patrol says every year children suffer needless injuries. In 2010, eight children under the age of eight were killed in a traffic crash and another 1,630 were injured.

Troopers issued citations to 2,130 drivers who failed to secure children less than eight years old in a child restraint/booster seat in 2010.
