CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS) - The Missouri Mission of Mercy will host a large-scale dental clinic May 3-4 at the Show Me Center.

The clinic will provide free oral healthcare to patients of all ages who cannot otherwise afford care. Doors open at 5 a.m.

Organizers say you can arrive early as the clinic is first come, first serve until they reach capacity. It is open to both adults and children, but no child care will be available.

MOMOM says to expect a long day. Dental services offered will include cleanings, fillings and extractions. They say they will not provide crowns, bridges or dentures.

The Show Me Center is located at 1334 North Sprigg Street in Cape Girardeau, Mo.

(KFVS) - The American Red Cross says the severe winter weather last week forced the cancellation of around 20 American Red Cross blood drives, resulting in a shortfall of more than 1,200 blood and platelet donations through the region.

Now that the storm has passed, eligible donors are encouraged to donate to help offset the current shortfall and ensure a stable supply.

“While inclement winter weather can hinder blood and platelet donations, patients’ needs for these lifesaving blood products is constant.” said Scott Caswell, CEO of the Missouri-Illinois Blood Services Region. “Now that the severe weather has subsided, we encourage eligible donors to give and help ensure patients’ needs continue to be met.”

According to the Red Cross, all blood types are needed, especially types O negative, A negative and B negative. Platelets are also in great need as they have a shelf life of just five days and must be replenished regularly.

(KFVS) - The International Association of Fire Chiefs is reminding residents to change their smoke and carbon monoxide detector batteries when they change their clocks for Daylight Savings Time.

October is National Fire Prevention Month and the time will change Nov. 4. IAFC is partnering with Energizer in effort to save lives.

According to IAFC, a home without a working smoke detector can be hazardous, even deadly. They say 38 percent of all deadly fire injuries happen in homes without a working smoke detector.
