Summer tips to protect your ears

Summer tips to protect your ears

MISSISSIPPI COUNTY, MO (KFVS) - The Perry County Memorial Hospital offers tips to protect your ears this summer.

Audiologist Becky Donnelly of PCMH says one of the issues is water. She says water left in the ears for a long period of time can cause Otitis Externa, also known as Swimmer's Ear, which can lead to painful ear infections.

“Most chlorinated water is okay to swim in without a great risk for an infection,” said Donnelly. “However, any non-chlorinated water is a breeding ground for several types of bacteria and the ear canal is a perfectly warm, dark environment to establish a little home.”

Donnelly says hearing aids are also at risk because of the humidity and sweating.

Tips for traveling safely with medications

MISSISSIPPI COUNTY, MO (KFVS) - The Perry County Memorial Hospital is offering tips for traveling safely with medications.

The hospital says it is important to talk to your pharmacist before you leave home about the proper precautions when traveling with medications.

"People aren't typically attentive to all of the factors they should consider regarding medication when they're packing for a trip, traveling or when they are going to be exposed to the sun," said Dana Cover, a pharmacist at Prescriptions Plus Pharmacy at the hospital.

Cover recommends a few extra steps in your travel plans such as:

  • Store medications in a cool, dry place and avoid direct sunlight because heat and humidity can affect the potency of medications
  • Do not leave medicine packed in a suitcase or vehicle trunk

Humane society has heat wave tips for pet owners

MISSISSIPPI COUNTY, MO (KFVS) - The Caruthersville Humane Society has released some tips for pet owners during the hot summer months.

According to the humane society, the summer heat can quickly dehydrate your pet, so it is important to keep clean water available at all times. Pet owners should remember shade or an area away from direct sunlight is also a must.

Along with shade and plenty of water, it is also advised to not leave animals in a car for any period of time during the hot summer months. The humane society says even in a short period of time, a car can quickly heat up above the outdoor temperature and your pet can suffer, or even die.

The Caruthersville Humane Society President and Animal Cruelty Investigator Karol Wilcox says fleas and ticks are more prominent this year along with biting flies.

"Please take the time to protect your pet against these pests," said Wilcox. "Open wounds from these bites can cause serious infections.

MoDOT launches Click it or Ticket campaign

MISSISSIPPI COUNTY, MO (KFVS) - According to MoDOT, more than 200 law enforcement agencies are expected to participate in this year's Click it or Ticket campaign May 23-June 5.

According to MoDOT, teens and pickup truck drivers are among those least likely to buckle up at 66 and 64 percent. Seven out of 10 Missourians killed in traffic crashes in 2010 were not wearing a seat belt.

"It's time we try some new things in our state to increase seat belt usage," said Leanna Depue, chair of the executive committee of the Missouri Coalition for Roadway Safety.
