Heartland kids battle rare disease that causes weight gain

EAST PRAIRIE, MO (KFVS)- Children in the Heartland are battling a new, rare disease.

Meet Reagann and Mason. These two children may seem like normal kids, but what they have is quite rare.

Both are diagnosed with a disease called ROHHAD. That is short for Rapid-Onset Obesity with Hypothalamic Dysfunction, Hypoventilation and Autonomic Dysregulation presenting in childhood.

There are less than 100 kids worldwide that have been diagnosed. This disease can turn deadly and right now, there is no known cure.

Mo. Preservation announces list of Most Endangered Places for 2013

(KFVS) - Missouri Preservation announced its List of Most Endangered Places for 2013 on Tuesday, May 21.

The endangered sites were identified at a Missouri Preservation Press Conference held at the Historic Henry Miller House at 106 Cape Road in Bloomfield, which is included on the 2013 List of Most Endangered Historic Places.

The Most Endangered Historic Places Program, one of Missouri Preservation's most visible programs, brings much needed attention to threatened historic resources throughout the state. The Most Endangered Program annually spotlights historic resources that are imperiled. Each year Missouri Preservation solicits nominations from around the State, evaluates the merits of the submissions, and announces the Most Endangered.  Throughout the year, Missouri Preservation provides technical assistance, advocacy, and planning support for the listed properties.

Dorena-Hickman Ferry to resume service Tuesday

DORENA, MO (KFVS)- The Dorena-Hickman Ferry plans to resume operation on Tuesday morning, May 21.

The ferry has been closed since the morning of April 22 when floodwaters reached the top of the Kentucky landing at Hickman.

After spending much of last year fighting to maintain operations due to low water on the Mississippi River, Captain Ed Floyd says it is ironic that the Dorena-Hickman Ferry had to shut down for an extended period this year due to high water.

The Dorena-Hickman Ferry normally is forced to halt operations when the Cairo gauge reaches about 44 feet. Floodwaters dropped enough Monday to allow the ferry crew to clear driftwood and other debris from the landings on each side of the river. They plan to resume service on the regular summer operating schedule starting at 7 a.m., Tuesday.
