MoDOT celebrates National Work Zone Awareness Week April 15-19

MoDOT celebrates National Work Zone Awareness Week April 15-19

(KFVS) - The Missouri Department of Transportation will celebrate National Work Zone Awareness Week from April 15-19.

To celebrate this week, the Southeast District has planned interactive activities to emphasize the importance of work zone safety.

"In 2012, 8 people were killed in work zones, a decrease from 2011 when 11 people were killed," said District Engineer Mark Shelton. "We want to make sure this progress continues. Our goal is to educate the public, as well as our employees and contractors, to ensure everyone gets home safe at the end of each day."

During Work Zone Awareness Week, check MoDOT's Southeast District facebook and twitter pages to participate in daily safety trivia.

"Work Zone Awareness Week is not only a time to remind drivers of the importance of slowing down and paying attention in work zones," said Shelton. "It is also a great opportunity for MoDOT to receive feedback about our work zones."

State Treasurer offers financial "spring cleaning" checklist

State Treasurer offers financial "spring cleaning" checklist

JEFFERSON CITY, MO (KFVS) - State Treasurer Clint Zweifel is providing Missourians a financial “spring cleaning” checklist.

Zweifel says he hopes Missourians will use to keep their finances in order and their property from becoming unclaimed property.

“There are a few simple steps each of us can take on a regular basis to keep our records up-to-date and our estates in order,” Treasurer Zweifel said. “It is important that we check on our accounts, safe deposit boxes, life insurance policies and wills. By making sure that our contact information is correct, our fees are paid up and changes made, Missourians can help keep their property where it belongs and avoid having to file Unclaimed Property claims to get it back.”

Here are a few “spring cleaning” tips for your finances from Zweifel:

1.      Make sure your bank has your current information. If you have moved or changed your name, be sure to inform your bank.

East Prairie pre-schoolers ride trikes to benefit cancer research

A Doyle elementary teacher who knows those tough pre-school children decided to try out a trike-a-thon to raise money for St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital.

EAST PRAIRIE, MO (KFVS)- It is a story of hope and inspiration as the town of East Prairie rallies around three, four-year-old cancer survivors.

A Doyle elementary teacher who knows those tough pre-school children decided to try out a trike-a-thon to raise money for St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital.

In two weeks classes more than tripled their goal, then doubled it twice.

All so kids like Hudson Cade can live to tell how they won the fight against a serious disease.

"It was in my chest, my belly, and my in my kidney," said Hudson.

Just a little boy, and yet Hudson Cade can proudly tell you how he feels about beating cancer.

"Real happy," he said.

To say the least, he's full of life.

All that energy is a miracle for his mother, Victoria.

"Look at my sons face he's alive, he's here," she said.

Hudson is among three children with similar stories of defeating the disease.

Deadline for farmers to file income taxes extended until April 15

Deadline for farmers to file income taxes extended until April 15

(KFVS) - The Missouri Department of Revenue is providing relief from possible penalties to farmers and fishermen who have not filed and paid their state income taxes by March 1.

According to the department, farmers and fishermen who choose not to make quarterly estimated income tax payments must normally file their returns and pay the full amount of tax due by March 1.

If the deadline is missed, they could be subject to penalties. However, this year the late enactment of the American Taxpayer Relief Act by the U.S. Congress shortened the time period the Internal Revenue Service could accept tax returns. The result of this situation is that the IRS will consider the tax returns from farmers and fishermen to be timely until April 15, even if they make quarterly estimated payments. The Missouri Department of Revenue has also decided not to impose any underpayment penalties for missing the March 1 deadline.

Sales tax holiday April 19-25 on qualifying appliances

Sales tax holiday April 19-25 on qualifying appliances

(KFVS) - The 2013 Show-Me Green Sales Tax Holiday would be a good time to replace your old, energy-hogging appliances.

During the seven-day period of April 19-25, you can buy a qualifying Energy Star refrigerator, clothes washer, water heaters, etc., and skip the state sales tax (up to $1,500 per appliance). It’s also another good reason to shop locally, as some cities including Perryville, Jackson and Ste. Genevieve are also waiving the city sales tax.

Qualifying appliances include the following:

  • Clothes washers
  • Heat pump water heaters
  • Dishwashers
  • Air conditioners
  • Furnaces
  • Heat pumps
  • Refrigerators
  • Freezers
